Choosing the Perfect Sized Chandelier

Choosing the Perfect Sized Chandelier

A chandelier can make your entryway or dining room come to life.  If your chandelier is too big it can over power the room and if it is too small then it doesn’t work and makes the room look smaller.  Choosing the perfect chandelier is part art and part science.  You need to think about the size of the room and the type of space that you have to work with.  Let’s go over the steps you need to take to find the perfect light fixture.

Step #1

Measure the room, both the length and the width.  Let’s say you have a room that is 10 feet wide by 12 feet long, the sum of the two numbers would be 22 feet.  Convert 22 feet to 22 inches and you will have the diameter of the chandelier that fits your room the best.  Now let’s figure out how tall your chandelier should be.  If you have ceilings that are 8 feet (which is average) they you should get a chandelier that is between 16-24 inches high.  You want the chandelier to be no more than 3 inches high for every foot of wall height.

Step #2

Define the area that is under the chandelier.  Since many chandeliers are above a dining table then the table will define the area.  If it is the living room then define it with an area rug, create a conversation area or use a table.

Step #3

If your hanging light fixture has multiple lights then you don’t want it to cover more than two thirds of the focal area.  So if you have a light fixture above the dining room table then the diameter of the lights should cover most of the table yet it should still be centered.

Step #4

Choose chandeliers that match the dimensions of your table.  Round chandeliers work with almost any dining table or entry way, on the other hand if you want a different style then it should match your table.  Long rectangular tables work well with long rectangular chandeliers with multiple lights.  Again it should be centered and no more than two thirds of the table.

Step #5

Make sure that your chandeliers are at least 30 inches above the table otherwise you’ll be hitting your head every time someone reaches across the table. When it comes to chandeliers in your entry way then it needs to be at least 7 feet from the floor.

Follow these tips and you will have the perfect chandelier in your home.  The right lighting can make your home feel warm and inviting not to mention highlighting the focal points with flattering light.

5 Tips to Get the Most out of Your Home Lighting

5 Tips to Get the Most out of Your Home Lighting

Home lighting can be complicated because it requires you to find the perfect balance between your needs, the needs of other family members, and also your budget. Moody lighting can help with this dilemma by creating an ambiance that matches what you’re looking for. It comes in different types, so you’re sure to find one that fits your style and taste.

#1. Lighting Affects Your Mood and Your Health

Lighting affects moods and health. People who spend more time in darker rooms are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and stress. If you want to be happy and healthy, you should consider using brighter lights or use candles for a soothing atmosphere.

#2. There is No One-Size-Fits-All Solution for Every Situation

You can’t just walk into a room and know how to make the lighting better. The whole point is to experiment. Take notes as you make changes, and find what works best for you.  A good way to start is by taking a photo of the room with your phone or camera and then using an app like Enlight or HomeLighting to see how that space will look with different kinds of light bulbs, fixtures, and lamps.

#3. Know What You’re Working With and Consider Its Impact on Other Rooms in the House

One of the most common types is ambient light, which is used to create an atmosphere or set a tone for a room. Ambient light can be created by putting lamps in every corner of the room, but it can also be achieved using just one lamp with spots on two walls. The type of light that you choose to use will affect the mood that you want to create for your home.

We need to know what kind of light we are working with and what kind will best suit our needs before we start setting up any lighting plans for our house. There are many different rooms in a house and they all need their own type of ambient light

#4. Soften Blinding Flashes Through Properly Positioning Candles or Incandescent Lights

Candles or incandescent lights can be placed at the back of the room for illumination. They should not be kept too high nor too close to the people in the room.

#5. Take Advantage of Natural Light as Much as Possible

Having the right amount of natural light in your home is not only mood-boosting but also good for your health. Natural light has many benefits. It can reduce stress, help you sleep better, improve your mood, and may even reduce the risk of depression.

The use of artificial lights can put an extra strain on us too. By using more artificial lights in our homes and offices we are exposing ourselves to more blue light which disrupts our body’s natural production of melatonin disrupting our sleep cycle.

Different Types of Lighting

Different Types of Lighting

Most of us have no idea how important good lighting is, especially in your home.  Have the wrong lighting in your bathroom and you will be terrified to look in the mirror.  Bad lighting in the kitchen and you won’t be able to see what you’re eating. Lighting is so important that they have their own stores.  If you have ever stepped into a lighting showroom then you have seen not only a plethora of different styles of lamps but a variety of different light fixtures as well.   Let’s talk about the different types of lighting that you probably have in your home right now and what purpose they serve.

Chandeliers

Chandeliers are generally found in entryways of high-end homes and typically in the dining area of average homes.  Chandeliers or even any type of hanging light fixtures work best when you have high ceilings otherwise you’re constantly walking into them.

Track Lighting

Track lighting is found in offices and commercial buildings everywhere, it is the most efficient way to light up the entire room.  In the home, you are most likely to find track lights in the kitchen and sometimes in the basement if the ceilings aren’t too low.

Recessed or Pot Lighting

These are becoming more and more common in newer homes.  You can add as many lights as you need, if properly arranged they can light up every corner of the room.  These lights are softer and can be found in living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms but most often in the basement.  They usually have dimmer switches to adjust the amount of light in the room and they are perfect in homes with low ceilings.

Lamps

Lamps are as decorative as they are functional.  Lamps serve to focus the light in certain areas such as desks, next to the bed or next to a sofa.  It allows you to read or work with adequate light while not making the rest of the room too bright.  If you go to a lighting store the vast amount of the products on display are going to be lamps.

Vanity Lighting

This type of lighting includes the lights around the bathroom mirror along with those around a mirror at a dressing table.  You can also include lights that are installed under the kitchen cabinets.

How to Choose the Right Bulbs for Your Space

How to Choose the Right Bulbs for Your Space

Light can have a huge impact on your mood. If you are reading, you want something bright and warm to see the words. If you are relaxing, you want something softer and more subtle.  If you are working or cooking then you need adequate light to get the job done.  We don’t realize just how important our light fixtures are until we are shopping for new ones.  Here are some tips on how to choose the right bulbs for your space.

Understanding The Importance of Lights in Home Decoration

The light bulb type is the most important factor to consider when buying lights for your home. There are different types of bulbs with different benefits. The color temperature is the temperature in kelvin (K) of the light given off by a lamp or fluorescent tube. The higher the number, the cooler the light will appear and vice versa.

There are many options for lights in your household now that technology has advanced so much. The typical incandescent light bulb is now being replaced by LED light bulbs, or better known as LEDs.  These new LED lights use less electricity, last longer periods of time without using replacement bulbs, and emit very little heat compared to typical incandescent lights – this makes them perfect for any room in the house!

Different Types of Light Bulbs and their Uses

When it comes to light bulbs, there are many different types to choose from. This includes LED lights, CFL lights, and multiple other options. LED lights offer high-quality lighting that helps conserve energy and maintain a low cost per year. They also have a longer lifespan than most other lighting options. CFLs are an excellent alternative to LED lights because they have a much lower cost per year and come in many different variations including warm white or cool white colors.

Here is a look at the difference between different types of light bulbs.

Choosing The Right Light Bulb For Your Space

Choosing the right light bulb for your space is not one-size-fits-all. For example, if you’ve got two lamps on opposite sides of your living room, you’ll want to opt for different wattage bulbs in order to get an even distribution of light.

  • Wattage

The most important factor to consider when choosing a bulb is wattage (or brightness). Wattage is measured in watts; the higher the number, the brighter it will be. A typical 100 watt incandescent bulb may be too bright for a small bedroom but perfect for a large family room or kitchen

  • Lumens

Lumens are another way to measure brightness. When comparing light bulbs, it’s helpful to convert watts into lumens so you can compare them on an even scale.

Out of all of the different types of light bulbs that you can’t choose LED bulbs may be your best bet.  They are the most versatile in terms of brightness, they last the longest and use the least amount of energy.  They do cost a little more than traditional bulbs but it is worth it in the long run.
